Silvia CIUBOTARU, O PRAVILĂ SOMPTUARIE ÎN IAŞII SECOLULUI XVIII

Anuarul Muzeului Etnografic al Moldovei – XXI / 2021

Abstract

Having as focal point the law given by Gavril Callimachi, Metropolitan of Moldavia and Suceava, in 1777 against the excessive expenditures on clothing, the study re-enacts the atmosphere of a century of opulence in boyar and princely wardrobes. The largest amount of information was provided by two monumental collections of internal documents of that time, accurately edited by the late historian Ioan Caproșu: Documente privitoare la istoria orașului Iași (I-X) and Sămile Visteriei Țării Moldovei (I-II). An entire system of handicrafts, trades and customs supported
the clothing luxury frame in the capital of Moldavia. Clothing, a symbol of social ladder climbing and of cultural refinement, renews itself in time. At the end of the 18th century, folk ballads, carols, orații and songs perpetuate the memory of these amazing articles of clothing.
