Abstract
Baron Jacob de Neuschotz (1817-1888) had modest origins, but he became and influent banker, very involved in the economic and social-cultural life of the city of Iași, the former capital of the Moldavian Principality. He stood up as a great philanthropist, founding an Orphanage and a Reformed Jewish Temple, granting scholarships for both Jewish and Romanian outstanding students. He made a significant donation to the Romanian Academy, which funded the “Jacob Neuschotz” Award for Literature.
Jacob de Neuschotz was also the chairman of the Jewish Alliance and the first consul (honorary) of the United States Iași. The present paper presents a previously unknown portrait of Jacob de Neuschotz, as well as the portraits of his daughters and nieces.
These paintings are oil on canvas and are preserved by the baron’s descendants, now living in Italy.
