Comments and observations concerning the results of research carried out by archaeologist Vlad Zirra in 1963 at Dragomirna Monastery
(Abstract)
The study presents the results of the archaeological researches carried out in 1963, at Dragomirna monastery, founded by metropolitan Anastasie Crimca. The archaeological researches were coordinated by archaeologist Vlad Zirra, and the results of the investigations remained unpublished by the author and were kept in the form of an internal report in the archive of the National Heritage Institute. Their publication is accompanied by some comments intended to highlight the contribution of these results to the study of medieval religious monuments.
The archaeological research carried out at the large church within the monastery led to the discovery of two important aspects regarding its constructive system. By making very deep foundations and by arranging the necropolis in the pronaos of the church – Dragomirna being the only church in which, since its construction, a fixed frame was built for the arrangement of burial places, the builders managed to implement a system which ensured the optimal conditions for the stability of the edifice. Also, several graves in the porch of the church were researched.
