A „state” project in the Europe of 1919-1920: The independent Banat
(Abstract)
In the European context of the years 1919-1920, the solutions proposed or circulated to clarify the status of some regions disputed by the former belligerents became part of an impressive register of problems. From the extremely serious to the almost silly, they headlined the proceedings of the Peace Conference, subsidiary to the agenda of the Territorial Commission.
In what follows, we will refer to an interesting and very little known political project that was submitted for analysis several times – in the form of a Memorandum – both to the decision-making factors in Paris, during 1919, and to the Society Nations, in the spring of 1920: the project of Constantin de Kayser, a lawyer from Banat of German/ Swabian ethnicity: the Republic of Banatia.
