Abstract
In the present article, the author analyzes marriages between Romanian (Moldovans) and Gypsies51, and presents the legal framework, regulating the issue of such marriages, as well as the actual situation recorded in Moldavia during the 18th century, and the territory between Prut and Dniester rivers during the first half of the 19th century. Marriages between Gypsies and Romanians can be examined simultaneously from two points of view: mixed marriage from an ethnic point of view and mixed marriage from a social point of view. According to the religious criterion, which was a basic one in a legitimate family formation, the representatives of both ethnicities were Orthodox, so from the canonical point of view it should not be an impediment for marriage. The problem arises because of the social status of the Gypsy – a subservient person.
