Abstract

The inventory of handing over the fortune of the diocese of Huși and the hermitage of Brădicești by Bishop Gherasim to the new hierarch, the first known so far in the history of the diocese, provides an overview of the institution’s fortune at the beginning of the 19th century.

The inventory left to Bishop Meletius is a poor one: hierarch, priest and deacon clothes, cult objects made of silver and brass, cult books in Romanian and Greek (there was no library). In Brădicești, the place of books in Greek is taken by those in Russian. The inventory comprises the registration of houses from the diocese, the former school premises, the cellar, the stable and the related facilities. There is also a situation of the quantities of cereals stored at the diocese and of its estates: Crețești, Ivănești, Stănilești, at the mill of Huși. The diocese had vineyards and a winery at Ochi point on the estate of Broșteni (today a neighbourhood in Huși), considered the vineyard’s most famous point. In Huși, the diocese had 12 shops – with a café (the first mention of such a public place), a stone cellar, a grocery store. The ponds, the hives, the cattle and the sheep in the inventory reflect the involvement in specific economic activities.
