Abstract
The Fortress of Șcheia – conventionally referred this way, as we do not know how it was referred to by its contemporaries – is one of the many uncertainties of the beginnings of the Moldavian statality, of the second half of the 14th century. If its almost immediate abandoning can still be explained by its unfortunate location, close to a promontory, the initial choice of the location remains a mystery. If we take into account the presence at a small distance of another fortress– The Princely Fortress– as well as the identical positioning hereof, also on a promontory, things become even more complicated. The present approach advances several hypotheses meant to provide an explanation to this situation.
